Iowa
January 4, 2008 When I was watching some campaign videos yesterday before the Iowa Caucus I saw a quote that r
eally hit home. It is a C.S. Lewis quote that I can not find at the moment but it basically stated that fascism in America will come from one bearing a cross and a flag.
I’m not a secularist ultra-Liberal, or a “faggot” as Ann Culter would so eloquently say, but I will say that I am a moderate liberal and a member of the Democratic Party. Liberal by definition means “generous”, not crazy baby killer or Communist. The view of liberals today are stereotyped by crazy ultra-liberals and the ACLU who’s opinions are uncompromising and sometimes offensive but these secularist views are not always what a liberal person sides with.
The way I see government is that the ruling power should not be our moral dictator. They are there to carry out and make laws of course, but not to tell us how to live our daily lives by telling us who we should marry and wither or not we can choose to abort. The government should be left to govern, not dictate our morality; this is fascism and with Arkansaws’ Governor Mike Huckabee winning in Iowa it should raise concerns about the growing Evangelical movement to shape American Politics.
As a Catholic, I believe in Christ. I know that my faith has installed in me the moral virtues that Ilive with today but I do not vote someone into an elected office, to represent men and women of other faiths, just because I candidate shares the same religious beliefs that I do. This method of choosing a leader, more importantly the President of the United States of America, is flawed and ill-advised.
I’m not going to sit here and say that what candidate is the best and who I support because I will mention that in a latter posting and why I do but I honestly think that our country needs to reexamine what we look for and how we vote for our political leaders.
Do not for one second think that I’m getting that Mit Romney should have won in Iowa though, I’m surprised that he hasn’t been coined as “Kerry #2″as much as he has flip-floped from major issue to major issue.
One thing’s for sure, Iowa has shown me why the Electoral College is still a viable institution.
