Sure, Jesus is the reason for the season but it really dose not matter what religion, if any, you call your own because the central message of Christmas is universal; Peace, love, hope and joy. These virtues are essential to every person, and during the holiday season these really shine.
What Christmas means to most of us is the season of giving which brings a lot of these virtues out in both the recipient and the giver. You see it in your dad when he open-ups that tacky Cosby sweater with a smile on his face and when your five year-old cousin opens up his eleventh gift with as much excitement as the first.
The holiday season brings out the best in most, well except for those pushy ass-holes who expect the best presents from the department store at 5pm on Christmas eve. But even those guys are trying to get the best for their family, in their own way.
As I was driving to my mother’s today, I thought the best thing that I could be doing today asude from spending time with my family could have been working at a soup kitchen or something along those lines during the season. It is the homeless and less-fortunate who are over-looked when we are out shopping for the ones that we love and when we sit down to feast on our over-cooked turkey and dressing. We all do it, mainly because our concerns are not invested in strangers. Sure there is the occasional can drive and toy drive but what is missing the most is most defiantly personal interaction with these people.
A coat, a bowl of soup and a Christmas card would bring so much joy into someone’s life who dose not have someone there to share Christmas with.
I remember a few years ago when I went to Mexico with a group called “Megan’s Gifts.” We gave them boxes filled with toys and hygiene products that we helped collect over the year. The image of their smiles is something that I will never forget.
With Christmas it is about so much more than a jolly old fat man or getting that sweet Nintendo Wii. It is about bringing that peace, love, hope and joy into the lives of whoever we possibly can, while enjoying a little piece of the pie ourselves.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everybody!
